Museum Project - 60,000 Books and 700 Easycrates

A total of 700 Easycrates were used to pack 60,000 books over 4 days.

700 of our Easycrates were used on this exciting project for the National Museum Cardiff, as a joint collaboration between Easycrate and our sister companies;  Edward Baden Relocations and Cube Self Storage.

The Museum had a requirement for the relocation of 870 linear metres of library stock internally from its main library, as well as the relocation of a proportion of its library stock into storage.

After thorough planning, internal and external collaboration, and utilising all of our expertise in library relocation projects acquired over the past 20 years, our integrated team of experts were able to curate a bespoke plan to ensure the smooth relocation of all books over a stipulated 4-day programme, with minimum downtime to the museum.

On moving day, our Edward Baden relocations team got straight to work and packed the Main Library Stock, North Stack and South Stack Stock into our durable Easycrates, (plastic standard lidded crates) with interlocking lids - that enabled each crate to be stacked on top of one another without damaging the books inside. There perfect solution as space was also limited inside the Museum.

With Easycrates, items such as books are better protected during transit as opposed to using standard cardboard boxes. When cardboard boxes are stacked over a long period of time, this can leads crushing due to the weight and thus, damaging the items inside.

A total of 700 Easycrates were used to pack 60,000 books in sequential order over a span of  four days!

Our teams sequentially packed each shelf location into our metre crates, and an index card was placed at the end of every shelf location. This ensured that the library stock be placed into the new location in the same sequential order as before. Each Easycrate was labelled twice, once on the outside and once inside, to ensure correct sequences were observed throughout the move. The label location also indicated the start point to unpack from left to right which ensured the books were returned in exactly the same way to precise positions, much to the client’s satisfaction and convenience.

Needless to say, the project was completed smoothly, within timeframe and with minimum downtime to the museum!

National Museum Cardiff is located in the heart of Cardiff’s elegant Edwardian civic centre, and houses national art, natural history and geology collections, as well as having lots of temporary and touring exhibitions popping up throughout the year.
